Subject-Specific English Language Readiness Assessment (SSELRA)

  • I've purchased my SSELRA, how do I access it?
  • Login to BTL, Click on (subject) English Language Readiness Assessment (e.g. Math 11 English Language Readiness Assessment)

  • Why do I need to take the SSELRA?
  • The SSELRA assesses your current english and subject-specific proficiency to ensure you are capable of taking the exam. For example, the Math 11 SSELRA will test your english proficiency and knowledge of Math 11 terms and basic problems.

  • What level of English do I need to have to write the exam?
  • You should be able to pass our ESL Level 2 at the least. Take our free online english assessment to see where you stand.

Online ESL Courses for Credit

  • How often should I do lessons? Is there a recommended schedule?
  • Courses are expected to be completed within 10 weeks at an average of 2 lessons per week.

  • How quickly will I receive feedback on my assignments?
  • You will receive feedback within 24 hours after you complete the assignment.


  • How do I schedule a time with a tutor?
  • You will be a assigned a tutor and they will contact you to find a suitable time to connect.

  • Do I need to know more than just english grammar?
  • All courses include listening, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading and writing.

Challenge Exams

  • Are Challenge Exams Easy?
  • Challenge exams are meant to be rigorous, maintaining the integrity of the curriculum and the standards of a quality education.  They are intended for students of strong ability or for those who have had opportunities for learning through some special circumstance.
  • Can I challenge a course more than once?
  • A student may challenge a course only once. Students who have successfully completed a course in BC may not write a challenge exam in the same subject at a later date for the purpose of improving their mark.
  • Can I take a course that I wrote a challenge exam for?
  • Students who would like to improve their mark in the course that they challenged are still eligible to take the course in an onsite or online classroom setting at a later date.
  • Can I apply to any school district in BC?
  • Yes, students can apply to any school district in BC. The grades and credits are valid for all school districts.
  • How does the challenge exam process pertain to my status as an International Student?
  • Writing a Challenge Exam is separate from the process of applying to become an International student in BC. Completing a Challenge Exam is not a guarantee of enrollment in a BC School District nor is it a guarantee of receiving a student visa.
  • When should I take a challenge exam?
  • It is a strong recommendation, given the mature level of understanding required in the Challenge activities, that students challenge the courses in the year prior to coming to British Columbia and not before. If they are challenging more than one course, appropriate times will be set up for the Challenge exams.  
  • Can I take a Challenge Exam to improve my current mark in a course?
  • Challenge exams are not meant as a way for students to improve their course marks, or as a replacement for the valuable experience of learning in an onsite or online classroom setting
  • Can I challenge more than one course?
  • Yes, if you are challenging more than one course, appropriate times will be set up for the Challenge Exams
