Challenge - Math

The prescribed learning outcomes in the Principles of Mathematics 10 to 12 IRP are based on The Common Curriculum Framework for K to 12 Mathematics (Western and Northern Canadian Protocol for Collaboration in Basic Education, 1996).

The provincial mathematics curriculum emphasizes the development of numeracy skills and concepts and their practical application in higher education and the workplace. The curriculum places emphasis on probability and statistics, reasoning and communication, measurement, and problem solving.

Principles of Mathematics 11 or 12 are two of the courses available for students to satisfy the Graduation Program mathematics requirement. Principles of Mathematics 10, 11, and 12 are each designated as four-credit courses. Click here to download background and learning outcomes for the BC Principles of Math 10-12 curriculum.

The Provincial exam for Principles of Mathematics 10 is mandatory.

Students may challenge the course by completing a Challenge Exam. However, they will also need to write the Math 10P Provincial exam at some point, before they can receive a final mark for that course. The Provincial exam can be written once the student is enrolled in a BC school. The Challenge mark makes up 80% of the final mark and the Provincial exam makes up 20% of the final mark.
