Challenge Exams - How it Works

Once you pass the challenge exam, you will receive credit for that course as soon as you become eligible to receive a BC Provincial Education Number (PEN). This currently happens when you enrol in a BC school. In most cases, the final grade for the course is the mark received on the Challenge Exam. The grades are accepted by all North American Universities.

Before you can take the Challenge Exam, you are required to complete a Subject-Specific Language Readiness Assessment (SSELRA) for the subject you wish to challenge. The SSELRA contains questions designed to test your English skills and basic subject knowledge to determine if you're ready to take the Challenge Exam.

You cannot take the challenge exam without taking the required SSELRA exam.

After passing the SSELRA for the subject you wish to challenge, the Challenge Exam Process includes the following steps:

  • Check the Challenge Exam schedule to find out when we
    will be in your city.

  • Purchase a Challenge Exam Package, login and complete the supplementary application.

  • Use our online study tools ike Success Checker, Streaming Video, and Practice Exams* to help prepare for the Challenge Exam.

  • Take the Challenge Exam on the date
    you signed up for.

  • A BC Teacher will mark your exam, and if you pass, you wiill receive documentation indicating your successful challenge and your mark on the exam.

  • Once you have enrolled in a BC school and have received a Provincial Education Number (PEN), you should notify the designated school district authority that provided the certificate of completion that you received when you successfully completed the Challenge Exam.

  • When the notification is received, the mark you achieved will be added to your graduation transcript.
